Now more than ever, you are needed to donate your old blankets, towels, and sheets to your local animal shelter. With financial cut-backs, repairs on shelters are often put off, so if it's drafty, the animals suffer. I know my shelter uses rags to stuff under doors. No kidding! Empty out those closets... this is your chance to get rid of stuff and do something useful!

New York Gov. David Paterson has proclaimed Oct. 10-18 as the first annual

New York Week for the Animals!

The event is designed to highlight the importance of animals in people's lives. Among the groups joining in the effort are the Mayor’s Alliance for New York City’s Animals, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and Animal Care and Control (AC&C).

Throughout the week, shelters, rescue groups and humane organizations across the state wil host animal-related events, including adoption fairs, low-cost spay/neuter clinics and shelter awareness days. More than 125 events are planned state-wide. (see link:  http://newyorkanimals.org/information.html) -- scroll all the way down for remaining events on page one, and go to page two for more)

In New York City, those looking to add a furry new member to their household can meet cats and dogs available for adoption from the ASPCA and AC&C. Adoption fees will apply, but AC&C will offer free adoptions of cats older than 1 year and the ASPCA will reduce adoption fees.
