Now more than ever, you are needed to donate your old blankets, towels, and sheets to your local animal shelter. With financial cut-backs, repairs on shelters are often put off, so if it's drafty, the animals suffer. I know my shelter uses rags to stuff under doors. No kidding! Empty out those closets... this is your chance to get rid of stuff and do something useful!

Thank You God, for Patrick's Recovery. Help Us To Remember The Other Dogs in Need.

A 1-year-old pit bull nicknamed Patrick sits Tuesday, April 5, 2011, near piles of gifts donated to him as he recovers at Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Tinton Falls, N.J., after being found starved and dumped in a trash chute. Kisha Curtis, 27, of Newark, pleaded not guilty to animal abuse charges. Authorities believe Curtis tied the dog to a railing in her Newark apartment building and left the state for more than a week. Letters and donations have poured in from the around the world in support of Patrick.

Oregonlive.com has the story.

Remember, there are many other dogs who suffer Patrick's fate each day, and they don't end as well as his story, hard as that has been. Not taking away from the little guy, but please direct your generosity to some other dogs in need. Here are a few rescues who take in "Patricks" on a daily basis:

Going in the Right Direction

Animal Care & Control in NYC has a great volume of animals with which it deals. Over the last few years numerous organizations have been instrumental in adopting out more dogs and fortunately the numbers of adoptions vs. euthanizations are going in the right direction.

From the Mayor's Alliance of NYC's Animal's website:

(This group partners with Picasso Veterinary Fund,
who are the ones that hosted the Second Annual Spot Olympics.)
The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, Inc., founded in 2002 and powered by Maddie's Fund, The Pet Rescue Foundation, with support from the ASPCA, is a coalition of more than 150 animal rescue groups and shelters that is working with Animal Care & Control of New York City (AC&C) to end the killing of healthy and treatable cats and dogs at AC&C shelters. To achieve that goal, the Alliance, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, helps its Alliance Participating Organizations (APOs) work to their highest potential to increase pet adoptions and spay/neuter rates, with the goal of transforming New York City into a no-kill community by 2015.
See their results: (sorry for the fuzzy graphic; if you click the pic it will enlarge)

How do Alliance Participating Organizations save all the animals not appearing in the euthanization rates in the above graph?

Each month, the Mayor's Alliance Wheels of Hope for NYC's Homeless Pets transport van program
moves approximately 150 animals out of NYC's Animal Care & Control (AC&C) shelters
and transports them to other Alliance Participating Organizations (APOs)
— shelters and rescue groups that will find them new homes.
Some trips are short; others are long hauls.
But either way, they carry a price tag
— and that cost is particularly related to the price of fuel.
When fuel prices rise, the cost of these life-saving transports can increase dramatically.

What can you do to help?
The Wheels of Hope for NYC's Homeless Pets fundraising campaign is seeking to raise much-needed funds to keep the wheels turning every day, and help the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals continue to transport as many animals as possible on the next leg of their journeys to permanent loving homes.

Thank you for helping to keep the wheels turning for New York City's Homeless animals!

Give here to keep the wheels of progress turning!

The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization (EIN: 73-1653635). All donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. A copy of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals' latest annual report may be obtained, upon request, from the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals or from the New York State Attorney General's Charities Bureau, Attn: FOIL Officer, 120 Broadway, New York, NY 10271.

Spot Olympics a Success!

More later... but for now here's a couple of pics from yesterday's wonderful event benefitting Picasso Veterinary Fund.

(I think I'll just sit right here)

(being lured with cheese!)

(What a brave little guy!)

(Sometimes one needs to be encouraged to come out of the tunnel)

(The above is the shot I was waiting to take the whole time! Little cute dogs are easy! Note the white fluffy dog in the background not being mauled).

(This was one of two semi-professional obstacle course dogs present. Note the quality of the picture!)

The day was very nice, there were people and dog treats galore, and I was able to buy freeze dried lamb lung, aka "crack for dogs," for my little guys. Good price, too!

Free Spay/Neuter Clinic for Westchester residents

While this event is oversubscribed for spay neuturing, they really need volunteers to assist, contributions, and towels or other clean linens. This event is for Westchester residents, and pitbulls are being spayed or neutured for free. It is a great service being provided. I hope you will consider contributing towards this worthy effort.

We rely on the kindness and generosity of animal lovers everywhere to make this special day happen. All donations are tax deductible!!

Every amount, large or small, is greatly appreciated and brings us one step closer to our goal. 100% of the money raised goes directly to the Spay/Neuter Clinic.

All vets and vet techs working with us are donating their time and not receiving any payment for their services.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN. THE MORE FUNDING WE RECEIVE, THE MORE ANIMALS WE CAN HELP.

Update on Joey

Remember this story?

http://shelter-tails.blogspot.com/2010/03/being-there-for-joey.html

(Joey, just rescued)(Joey, after a little TLC)

Well, take a look:

And video!...

From Picasso Veterinary Fund's site:
RuthAnn reports that Joey will remain in her care for the next few months until he is completely healthy and ready for adoption. "He's on a very healthy diet of home-cooked dog food, carrots, apples, and vitamins. His hair is starting to grow in and he is looking mightily handsome. He loves to lay out in the yard in the sun — it hasn't been that hot yet, but when it is, he will require sun block!"
As part of his treatment, RuthAnn bathes Joey every other day. "He really likes bath time. He has to be the best dog ever when it comes to bath — he jumps right in the tub!" she says. "I think it's because I massage him for about 15 minutes, massaging in the medicated shampoo. Either that or he's just a typical male — loves massages and attention!"

Joey is a playful pup, and so willing to please, says RuthAnn. He's completely housebroken, doing well learning basic commands, and he loves kisses! He was recently neutered and now is making friends with RuthAnn's other foster dogs. Next, she'll begin a search for a permanent home for Joey. "I want Joey to have a back yard and kids to play with," she says. "He is an overgrown baby himself!…the most loving puppy, considering what was done to him." Watch the Happy Joey Video RuthAnn made and see for yourself!

See, folks, all it takes is a little love. These guys give us everything in return.

Also from their site:
We hope you'll join us in our efforts to create more happy endings by donating to the Picasso Veterinary Fund. Or consider providing a caring foster home for a cat or dog like Joey who needs a few weeks, or a few months, to get back in shape for adoption. Let us know if you'd like to help; you can e-mail us at picasso@AnimalAllianceNYC.org.

Please consider adding Picasso Veterinary Fund to your list of worthy non-profit organizations, and those all need a few bucks here and there.

When I ask, I often have given myself to these groups (as is the case with the last two). Even smaller contributions help. Even if it's a nominal gift, it's encouraging for them to hear from people from all over the country and the world that you think their work is worthwhile.
