Going in the Right Direction

Animal Care & Control in NYC has a great volume of animals with which it deals. Over the last few years numerous organizations have been instrumental in adopting out more dogs and fortunately the numbers of adoptions vs. euthanizations are going in the right direction.

From the Mayor's Alliance of NYC's Animal's website:

The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, Inc., founded in 2002 and powered by Maddie's Fund, The Pet Rescue Foundation, with support from the ASPCA, is a coalition of more than 150 animal rescue groups and shelters that is working with Animal Care & Control of New York City (AC&C) to end the killing of healthy and treatable cats and dogs at AC&C shelters. To achieve that goal, the Alliance, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, helps its Alliance Participating Organizations (APOs) work to their highest potential to increase pet adoptions and spay/neuter rates, with the goal of transforming New York City into a no-kill community by 2015.

How do Alliance Participating Organizations save all the animals not appearing in the euthanization rates in the above graph?

Each month, the Mayor's Alliance Wheels of Hope for NYC's Homeless Pets transport van program

moves approximately 150 animals out of NYC's Animal Care & Control (AC&C) shelters

 and transports them to other Alliance Participating Organizations (APOs)

— shelters and rescue groups that will find them new homes.

Some trips are short; others are long hauls.

But either way, they carry a price tag

— and that cost is particularly related to the price of fuel.

When fuel prices rise, the cost of these life-saving transports can increase dramatically.

What can you do to help?

The Wheels of Hope for NYC's Homeless Pets fundraising campaign is seeking to raise much-needed funds to keep the wheels turning every day, and help the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals continue to transport as many animals as possible on the next leg of their journeys to permanent loving homes.

Also, meet Terry, a dog who was rescued by NYPD officers from a junkyard where he, his mom, and his siblings were neglected, living in filth, and starving. Terry required medical treatment for a serious abscess on his head, which was paid for by the Picasso Veterinary Fund of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals. After treatment and tender loving care, Terry was well enough to leave the hospital. Renamed Finnegan, he now resides in a new adoptive home!

Free Spay/Neuter Clinic for Westchester residents

While this event is oversubscribed for spay neuturing, they really need volunteers to assist, contributions, and towels or other clean linens. This event is for Westchester residents, and pitbulls are being spayed or neutured for free. It is a great service being provided. I hope you will consider contributing towards this worthy effort.

We rely on the kindness and generosity of animal lovers everywhere to make this special day happen. All donations are tax deductible!!

Every amount, large or small, is greatly appreciated and brings us one step closer to our goal. 100% of the money raised goes directly to the Spay/Neuter Clinic.

All vets and vet techs working with us are donating their time and not receiving any payment for their services.

Being There For Joey

I'm back from beautiful San Francisco and Los Angeles, where I traveled for a week for work. While in San Fran I had the pleasure of meeting a newly adopted female black and white pitbull, when I stopped in a pet store for a bone for Renaldo. A woman had adopted the pit from a shelter (and certain death) only five days before. What a sweetie! She was playing with toys in the store, picking out what Mommy was going to buy her. Pitbulls love squeak toys. I cautioned her not to put her dog with little dogs just yet, or even ever. I'm not a fan of pits with little dogs or kids, that is, unless they are raised together and the dog was a puppy or a very young one. I know a lot of pitbull fans probably will think that's an apostasy but 'thems the breaks.' It isn't that the dogs are bad (I love them, and leave in 45 minutes to go walk the babies at Yonkers Animal Shelter) but when they do bite, that bite is catastrophic. My personal feeling is that they are best suited (unless adopted young or as a puppy) by a single person, a couple, or a parent with an older kid. I say this while knowing of numerous families that have kids and pits, and I'm glad those work out. Were it my kid, I would not mix them. There are so many single people, so many childless couples that make suitable homes, and then get the love and companionship that comes from an extremely loyal and silly dog, that that seems the best route to me. They are wonderful animals, but one must exercise caution at all times when putting any dog with kids. Kids do kid things -- running, squeaking, shouting, sometimes crying, and some of these can be triggers for an already unsure dog, especially when left alone with a child.  And then there are the dogs that were never trained to not play-bite (something you can do with some dogs but should never consider doing with a pit!) and they don't know their own strength; this can escalate quickly into a bad situation. So the chance of catastrophy, while maybe not as likely as being in a car accident, is there and it normally ends badly for everyone involved.

While in San Fran, I spotted three other pits who were walking with cool looking people in the city. SF has a tendancy to be a politically correct (ha!) and folks there are pushing back against anti-pitbull forces. Good, they are beautiful and loving dogs and deserve homes.

Anyway, I scan the news for interesting stories all the time, and some I post here. This one happened back here in New York City, and I'm glad Joey is with a group that cares about him now. This kind of neglect is unnecessary, and cruel.  Mange can be treated easily enough; it's just a long treatment.

The heroes of this story are Picasso Veterinary Fund

and the

New York Police Department.

In case you don't know who Picasso Veterinary Fund is, here's a quote from their site:

Traditionally, animals with extreme medical needs who are taken in by animal control shelters are euthanized because the funds needed to pay for extensive surgeries and other expensive treatment just haven't been available. But many of these animals would make wonderful, loving pets if only they had access to the medical treatment they need. The Picasso Veterinary Fund was created to give these animals the second chances they deserve. By paying for medical treatment that otherwise would not be available to them, the Fund is saving lives that in the past would have been lost.

And this is the story about Joey, who is now doing well, also from their site:

When NYPD officers found Joey tied up to a bench at a beach in Far Rockaway on a cold February morning, he was more than a sight for sore eyes; he was the picture of the shameful result of neglect, to the point of abuse, that someone had perpetrated against this calm young dog.

Malnourished at 48 pounds and suffering from a horrific case of demodectic mange that had advanced to the point where it ruptured his hair follicles, the year-and-a-half old Pit mix also suffers from a bacterial skin infection secondary to the mange that involves three different types of bacteria. He also has a deep wound on his front left leg.

"Vacancy" Ad Campaign asks New Yorkers, "Is there room in your life for a homeless pet?"

NEW YORK, NY – Tuesday, September 22, 2009 – From September 28 until October 25, a series of intriguing print ads will pose a simple question to New York City subway riders: Is there room in your life for a homeless pet?

The advertising campaign was created to encourage New Yorkers to adopt their next pet from a shelter or rescue group instead of purchasing from a pet store. The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals worked with Filter Advertising in New York City (who created the ads pro bono) to develop the ads two years ago for an outdoor poster campaign that ran for a month throughout the city. Now the campaign has been recast to reach the tremendous audience of New York City subway riders.

The campaign's revival was made possible as a result of the successful fundraising efforts by TAILS (Toward Animals In Loving Spaces) of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals — a group of young New York philanthropists who work with the Mayor's Alliance to help achieve its goal of transforming NYC into a no-kill community by 2015. TAILS raised the funds to place the ads at a spring fundraiser held specifically to fund the campaign. The timing of this campaign corresponds with the New York Week for the Animals, which takes place October 10–18 and features a wide range of animal-related events throughout New York State, including adoption events, spay/neuter clinics, microchipping clinics, and many more events that celebrate the importance of animals in our lives.

The ads' creators developed the "Vacancy" campaign as a simple, graphic and emotional approach to pet adoption based on a single premise: asking New Yorkers if they have room in their lives for a homeless pet. The situations depicted in the series of five ads show people in recognizable settings where a dog or cat would naturally be present. But instead of a cat or dog, the absence of a pet is suggested by a "vacancy" sign. For example, one of the ads features a sleeping young couple, and at the foot of the bed (where there could very well be a dog or a cat) is a vacancy sign. The tagline states, "Is there room in your life for a homeless pet?"

"We are excited to launch our first advertising campaign in the NYC subways, and hope that it will increase responsible pet adoptions in our city and decrease the number of homeless pets at our city shelters," says Jane Hoffman, President of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals. "We're grateful for the efforts made by the TAILS fundraisers and also Filter Advertising, who were the driving forces behind this moving campaign."
