 Shelter pet adoptions are on the rise, despite the ongoing recession and high rates of unemployment.

 Each year approximately 4 million pets are adopted.

 The percentage of pets in homes adopted from animal shelters and rescue groups has risen from 27% to 29% in the last two years and encouraging statistics show that euthanasia of shelter pets is down 10% since 2009.

 However, 2.7 million healthy and treatable pets are still losing their lives in shelters each year.

 Seventeen million people will acquire a dog or cat within the next year.

 The Shelter Pet Project is the first animal welfare campaign that the Ad Council has taken on in its 60-year history.

1,000 Dogs and Cats Up For Adoption in Riverside California, or They Will Be Euthanized

Folks. This. Is. Your. Chance. To. Do. Something. For. Shelter. Animals.

Go here. Get on a plane, get your dog or cat. Or give, and make it possible for a rescue to pull a dog or cat. Due to overcrowding, Riverside California is euthanizing (already begun) a staggering 1,000 animals.

Who's to blame? We can thank stupid movies that picture dogs that can talk, or celebs that carry around dogs like accessories, sheeple, and those looking to make a quick buck. And let's not forgot people who adopted a dog, bought a dog, and then disposed of them like trash.

Please, act now. Go get your dog or cat. I did it with Mr. Wiggins (from a gassing shelter in Louisiana) and have never regretted it. He's such a light in my life I cannot imagine not being with him.

All breeds and mixes are available.

Going in the Right Direction

Animal Care & Control in NYC has a great volume of animals with which it deals. Over the last few years numerous organizations have been instrumental in adopting out more dogs and fortunately the numbers of adoptions vs. euthanizations are going in the right direction.

The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, Inc., founded in 2002 and powered by Maddie's Fund, The Pet Rescue Foundation, with support from the ASPCA, is a coalition of more than 150 animal rescue groups and shelters that is working with Animal Care & Control of New York City (AC&C) to end the killing of healthy and treatable cats and dogs at AC&C shelters. To achieve that goal, the Alliance, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, helps its Alliance Participating Organizations (APOs) work to their highest potential to increase pet adoptions and spay/neuter rates, with the goal of transforming New York City into a no-kill community by 2015.

How do Alliance Participating Organizations save all the animals not appearing in the euthanization rates in the above graph?

Each month, the Mayor's Alliance Wheels of Hope for NYC's Homeless Pets transport van program

moves approximately 150 animals out of NYC's Animal Care & Control (AC&C) shelters

 and transports them to other Alliance Participating Organizations (APOs)

— shelters and rescue groups that will find them new homes.

Some trips are short; others are long hauls.

But either way, they carry a price tag

— and that cost is particularly related to the price of fuel.

When fuel prices rise, the cost of these life-saving transports can increase dramatically.

What can you do to help?

The Wheels of Hope for NYC's Homeless Pets fundraising campaign is seeking to raise much-needed funds to keep the wheels turning every day, and help the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals continue to transport as many animals as possible on the next leg of their journeys to permanent loving homes.

Puppy-Mill Puppies Making Their Way to Long Island for Adoption

Dogs rescued from Missouri puppy mills arrive by bus in Chicago, will be flown to Long Island

CHICAGO (AP) — More than 50 dogs rescued from puppy mills in Missouri are flying to Long Island in the hope of finding loving homes.

The dogs were taken by bus Thursday to Chicago, where they were given a rest break and special Thanksgiving meals.

On Friday morning, Pet Airways was scheduled to fly the dogs from Chicago to New York's LaGuardia Airport. They will then be taken to the North Shore Animal League America in Port Washington, N.Y., where they will be put up for adoption.

Missouri launched an aggressive campaign last summer to investigate and prosecute unlicensed dog breeders.

In September, more than 100 dogs were removed from what officials called an unlicensed puppy mill in mid-Missouri where dogs were living in filthy conditions.

This is New York City's largest cat adoption event, where hundreds of wonderful cats and kittens will be available for adoption from two dozen shelters and rescue groups. This is the annual cat adoption extravaganza that in years past has taken place at Madison Square Garden. This year's Adopt-A-Cat will make its debut at the Jacob K. Javit's Convention Center, in tandem with the AKC/CFA's Meet the Breeds event. Adopt-A-Cat is one of the major events in New York City during the first annual New York Week for the Animals. Don Loprieno, author of The Stony Point Whisker Club, will be signing copies of his book on both days and donating a portion of his book sales to the Mayor's Alliance.

Puttin' On the Dog features a dog show with 17 classes of entries, including Biggest Lap Dog, K-9 Krooners, A Pooch Who Can Smooch, Homely Hounds, and Clever K-9 Tricks, among others. Serving as this year's emcees will be comedian Jane Condon from the hit TV show, Last Comic Standing, and radio personality Matt Zako from 95.9 FOX FM radio. The public can spend the day watching the dog show and parade, attending a silent auction, eating an array of food, visiting vendor booths and dog/cat adoption tents, purchasing clothing and other items, and trying their luck at raffles. A special Children's Corner will offer face painting, clowns, a fire truck, and more. The Greenwich Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) will conduct pet CPR demonstrations. All-day admission is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and children over 5, and free for children 5 or younger.

New York Week For The Animals (Oct. 10-18th)

New York Gov. David Paterson has proclaimed Oct. 10-18 as the first annual

New York Week for the Animals!

The event is designed to highlight the importance of animals in people's lives. Among the groups joining in the effort are the Mayor’s Alliance for New York City’s Animals, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and Animal Care and Control (AC&C).

Throughout the week, shelters, rescue groups and humane organizations across the state wil host animal-related events, including adoption fairs, low-cost spay/neuter clinics and shelter awareness days. In New York City, those looking to add a furry new member to their household can meet cats and dogs available for adoption from the ASPCA and AC&C. Adoption fees will apply, but AC&C will offer free adoptions of cats older than 1 year and the ASPCA will reduce adoption fees.

Day At The Shelter

Early this morning I thought it was going to rain, following with the streak of bad luck these last few weekends. But the rain held out and though some volunteers were busy with the adoption event in White Plains, we ended up with a fair amount at Yonkers Animal Shelter, plenty of dogs walked, and the homecoming (of sorts) of the one's who didn't get taken. Pictures to follow.

I was amazed by the number of people in today looking for "little dogs."  I can understand; I have a little dog, and I got him so he would be portable when I go to see my Mom in Florida during half the year, and when I travel any other place.  But I can't help but think that some of it is people being afraid of these dogs, too, and that's too bad.  So many have been socialized by the staff and volunteers for so long, and most of them have been adoptable from when they got to us, that it's the bad rap working against them again.  They are such good dogs, I can't even begin to tell you. 

So today a group of our long-timers (dogs and volunteers, that is) went to County Center in White Plains, New York to do the dog and pony show.  One dog was adopted; a puppy.  But at least the dogs that went did something interesting for the day and got to ride in the car!  I trust they will sleep well tonight!

Rufo (left) looking fine in his outfit, with Mike the Volunteer knowing exactly how to handle him and get him to sit nicely while I took the picture.  On the right is GiGi, managed by Gail the Volunteer, and the person who runs the flea market twice monthly that pays for the not-in-the-budget operations for dogs, very expensive medicines, and finding permanent homes at rescues for the difficult-to-place dogs.  People donate items to Yonkers Animal Shelter and if they can't be used for the dogs themselves, and if they are in good condition, they get sold to raise money.  Gail does quite well!

Butch - who gave me a hard time today, getting all excited and grabbing the leash. He's in a pen that sadly does not see the grass or woods nearby and he gets anxious to get out. But he's a good boy and shaped up once he got out and got to romp around.

Miss Sophie, my "baby girl."  She has kennel cough and so had to be isolated this week, both so she doesn't give it to other dogs and so they can keep track of her since she needs meds. The shelter is big on process and system. They have to be.

Rascal, and he is!  Dottie the Volunteer was at the adoption event today and normally she walks the puppies.  So I got a treat and got to walk two. Boy, were they rambunctious!  I like the older dogs, but these two are really cute.

Healy, a nice girl who is a blue pit bull!  She's gorgeous; blue-grey and brindled with a little beige. She came in to us VERY thin and the staff and all the volunteers kept giving her extra meals. She's shaped up nicely and now I don't give her anything more than a treat. A really nice and calm dog.

Hannah Banana, my sweetie! She got a big comforter as a bed today, affording me the whole-body-wag which I love. A volunteer brought a bunch of towels and blankets in, and I promptly gave them out!  Plus a bag of toys that went over very very well.  I wish I got some pictures of that.  This particular blanket Hannah is sitting on was donated by a colleague of mine. She made sure to give the picture to her son, whose blanket it was!

More Updates From Yonkers Animal Shelter

Darlene's fundraiser (Cause for Paws) raised a couple of thousand dollars for the new shelter this past Sunday at the JFK Marina in Yonkers. Pretty good! "Next year will be even better," she says. I was sorry I could not go but was having my apartment painted the day after. All the volunteers I spoke to who went said it was a lot of fun. Glad the rain held out. Keep in mind Darlene is a staff member and used her weekend to raise money for the dogs and cats.

Six dogs were either adopted or rescued this week from the Shelter. That's on top of at least two that I know of from last week. What a banner week it has been! Some of the adopted included Ceasar (The Giant Brindle Male Pit Who Stole Volunteer Gayle's Heart) and Bette the Boxer, both of whom have nice homes tonight. Tomorrow another woman is adopting a dog to go with the male pit bull she has already, who only likes young females. haha. The two dogs played today in the pen where prospective adoptive parents and their maybe-dogs play and get to know one another.

There is an adoption event for cats tomorrow taking place at the Petco in Scarsdale on Central Park Avenue. Next week I'll report on how that went. It's interesting to be on the shelter-end those events now, which I have seen for many years. Those events are how I got my last three dogs.

The website for Yonkers Animal Shelter is going to start including Happy Tails, a reporting of sorts of all the dogs who get adopted or rescued. It's more than you think. When they get that up and running, I'll do a post on it. I'm excited because I think people should see all the very positive and dedicated work happening there. As a still-new volunteer, I am duly impressed. This is an unglamorous place if there ever was one (hence, the need for a new shelter) but the level of commitment and care on the part of volunteers who supplement the care given by the very-able staff who go above and beyond, is an interesting sight indeed. I never expected so many people to be working so hard to make sure dogs gets adopted, and into the right homes. I am so completely pleased that I began walking dogs there two months ago, I cannot tell you. It has added a lot to my life, and it's much more happy than sad.

On that note, YAS's Golf Tournament is fast approaching! August 20th - next Thursday - golfers will tee off at 12:30 at Split Rock and will dine at The Riverview that evening (see post below). There will be many prizes and gifts for attendees, and they include the many gifts solicited by the volunteer committee working to put the event together. This week I had the pleasure of talking to Bronxville store owners twice to ask them to make a gift. Seven came through and there might have easily been more but I do have a job! Next year, if we do this or some other fundraiser, I will start much in advance. This wasn't bad for one and a half weeks. People were genuinely interested in knowing about the new shelter, and happy to help.
