Now more than ever, you are needed to donate your old blankets, towels, and sheets to your local animal shelter. With financial cut-backs, repairs on shelters are often put off, so if it's drafty, the animals suffer. I know my shelter uses rags to stuff under doors. No kidding! Empty out those closets... this is your chance to get rid of stuff and do something useful!

3 Dogs Starved To Death at Memphis Animal Shelter

via the Associated Press:

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Records show at least three dogs were starved to death at the city-operated Memphis Animal Shelter. The Commercial Appeal reported details of a search warrant executed last week were made public Tuesday.

The raid by Shelby County Sheriff's officers came after a whistleblower complained animals were being mistreated.

Citing records, the newspaper reported a female mixed breed puppy that was brought to the shelter in August died within three weeks of what was described as "non-accidental starvation." A veterinarian said the dog had lost one-quarter of her body weight.

District Attorney Bill Gibbons said criminal charges are possible in the case.

City animal services administrator Ernest Alexander and 10 shelter employees were relieved of duty, but Memphis Mayor A C Wharton said Tuesday that the employees are back on the job as he awaits an internal investigation about shelter operations.

"I can't say at this point whether they did everything right or did everything wrong until I get the results, which I will have at the end of the week," said Wharton

Wharton said that volunteers are providing an "additional layer of oversight" over the employees.

Deputies seized 17 boxes of documents, four computers, six CDs or DVDs, empty dog food bags and two cell phones, according to the warrant.

Among the potential charges are aggravated cruelty to animals, official misconduct and tampering with or fabricating evidence, which could result from dogs being held for court that were allowed to die, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Photos of the emaciated dog were taken by the tipster, who repeatedly brought the dog's condition to the attention of shelter employees, said Sheriff's Office spokesman Steve Shular. A necropsy showed that the puppy hadn't eaten in at least 72 hours.

According to the warrant, volunteers at the shelter had sent numerous e-mails to the administrator, as well as Division of Public Services and Neighborhoods director Kenneth Moody, warning that animals were in poor condition.

Moody retired from the position in July.

(Comment from dellbabe68: I want to say that I personally have seen dogs fed twice a day by shelter staff and still be very thin. Though this story appears to have a different circumstance, as evidenced by the necropsy performed, it should be noted how much the stress of being in a shelter can have on a dog's weight. Mr. Willie, for example, is fed well and I feed him myself each time I see him (three times a week) and yet he is very thin.  Stress makes a number of dogs remain very thin in a shelter environment.)

Might want to pen a letter or make a call to the Memphis shelter (note: there only seems to be one municipal shelter in Memphis), letting them know they need to be more mindful, not to mention get rid of incompetent staff. I cannot help reading their website and picturing a 1950's-styled shelter, just like Yonkers Animal Shelter. I do have to wonder why they would not have acted on the volunteer's tip that some dogs were looking underweight.  I can tell you, if a dog at YAS was looking sick, limping, looked underweight, or whatever, about ten people would report it to the shelter director and it would be acted upon immediately. That's assuming the staff wouldn't notice it themselves, which happens plenty. But having many eyes looking after the dogs is good because it is hard to keep track of over 100 animals at one time.

Please be firm but considerate and of course, do not threaten any staff. Just let them know you are keeping an eyeball on them via the news. Ask how this could have happened.

Who we are

Memphis Animal Services, or "Animal Shelter" as we are often called, has been around since the early 1950's providing animal services to the City of Memphis and Shelby County. Although primarily a municipal animal care and control department for the City of Memphis, the service center (shelter) does provide for housing and other related animal services for animals from Shelby County. Our mantra has always been protecting people from the dangers and nuisances of uncontrolled animals and keeping animals safe from mistreatment and abuse. Promoting, motivating and enforcing responsible pet ownership is our number one goal.

Rainy Day At The Shelter

I'm so bummed it's raining today. I used to love the rain (got to sit in, wear pajamas, drink soup or tea), but now it means the dogs sit in the dampness all day.  Nothing can be done about it. It's that or they stay in crates (indoors) all day. To their credit, most volunteers showed up today to do the usual walking. Everyone was soaked. The dogs, us. But it's the only real exercise they get and who could deprive them of it?
Lots of dogs getting adopted.  More to report on that when it's time. I hope to have pictures!
Today I walked Mr. Willie (of course, he's my little honey), Hannah Banana, Daffy, Hank (who I think has a home but he's got to be neutured,) Maybelle, Dixie (who still insists on her biscuit), and June (who smells everything in site and who has hookworm so I walk her last, washing my leash at the end).

Building Hope, The Campaign for the New Yonkers Animal Shelter

I attended a meeting last night about the upcoming Golf Tournament being held at Split Rock Golf Course (http://pelhamsplitrock.americangolf.com/) on Thursday, August 20th to benefit the New Yonkers Animal Shelter. The new shelter - when it's built - will replace the almost 50 year-old shelter at 120 Fullerton Avenue in Yonkers, New York (currently where Mr. Willie, Miss Sophie, and Hannah Banana - et all - all live).

When: Thursday, August 20th
Where: Split Rock Golf Course
Registration: Noon

Tee-time: 12:30pm
Cost: $600 per team, $150 per individual

There will be a silent auction (they are still accepting gifts), a 50-50 contest, and other prizes.

After the tournament a dinner is being held at The Riverview in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York (a beautiful historic town along the Hudson River), which is being hosted by Riverview owner and generous benefactor of the shelter, Mike Silvestri, along with the New Yonkers Animal Shelter Committee (who I had the pleasure of meeting last night). The committee is headed up by Dr. Kay Pistone Carucci, who invited me to join the committee, which I have done. Though this event is only two weeks off, I assured Kay that I would help with the next event they plan.

Dinner tickets are $75 per person.

Even if you don't play golf, you are welcome to attend the dinner. Bring a friend! The Riverview is gorgeous. Mike supplied the committee with dinner and dessert as we met on location, planning the last minute details.

Checks can be made out to New Yonkers Animal Shelter, c/o Dept. of Parks & Recreation, 285 Nepperhan Avenue, Yonkers, NY 10701. They can be reached at 914-377-6450.

More info to come.

Repurpose Of This Blog

Slight change. Given the many shelter and pet-related issues out there, I am going to use this blog as a general purpose advocacy site instead of only advocating for one shelter. Since starting this blog-project, I keep coming across compelling stories that need telling and I know that interesting (I hope) narrative coupled with facts and information will keep people visiting. This week we had visitors from London, several from areas in Canada, Wisconsin, Maine, Missouri, Los Angeles, New York (Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Westchester), Michigan, North Carolina, Conneticut, Ohio, and a bunch that I could not identify. It makes sense that I attempt to reach a larger audience, and my hope is that we together can build a wider base of support for shelter animals. Everyone can make some contribution, either in time, money, ideas they are willing to see through to fruition, and lobbying your local legislators when they need it.

I'll still be walking the sweeties at Yonkers Animal Shelter (http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/NY63.html ), so you can expect to see other stories about those dogs and cats. However, now there will now also be stories on rescue organizations, issues that need lobbying and for which I will post information, notable items in the news, and fundraisers that need supporting. There are a lot of things that need doing and I think it is best to focus my energy in more than one place.

Still, I have a special place in my heart for Yonkers Animal Shelter and in the next couple of days I'll post information about upcoming events. Most notable is their upcoming Golf Tournament and Dinner on August 20, which is raising money for their new shelter - a desperately needed facility if there ever was one. YAS was literally built in the 50's. Here is a link. http://www.newyonkersanimalshelter.org. They are poor in facility but rich in volunteers and staff that go above and beyond. On that subject, don't forget Darlene's Cause for Paws Poker fundraiser this Sunday, August 9th (http://shelter-tails.blogspot.com/2009/07/cause-for-paws-poker-fun-and-bbq.html).

Tomorrow I am off from work and will spend half the day running errands and half walking dogs. Same with Saturday. I can't think of a better way to spend days off! I always look forward to seeing them. And I got my shipment of special bison treats (and other things on clearance from Drs. Foster and Smith). Mr. Willie should be glad. And Miss Sophie, and Cloe, and Hannah Banana, and George The Nice Calm Dog, Debbie and Dixie, and Pudgie - who likes his toys, and Spuds The Giant RCA Dog.

Mr. Willie

I just love this dog! He is home-ready. Right now he's doing this thing where he melts into your legs to be petted, and he knows to do it especially right before you put him back in the dog run. He's a Big Mush.

A little on the thin side so I make sure to give him additional food when I go, even though he gets a good amount at his "temporary home." Once he fattens up a bit I'll stop and just give him a treat.

Some picture links

Here you can get to all the dogs at the shelter who are up for adoption.

Below are some of the dogs I've mentioned, that I've had an opportunity to get to know.
Debbie (note the mole on her left cheek):

Pudgie:

Miss Sophie (my little honey!) - such beautiful eyes and a great smile. I only wish her very feminine pink polka dot collar was showing!

Mr. Willie (note the regally held head):

Hannah:

And finally... Spuds! (aka The Giant RCA Dog) ... he's such a nice boy.
